This beautiful stone-built house sits on the edge of the village. A narrow street leads to the outer courtyard, where one can see the two massive trees (oak & walnut) that offer shade and protection.
A covered gate leads us to the inner courtyard, where there is an external bathroom, a small guest room and a small garden. Both the inner and outer courtyards offer privacy, and the mountain and valley views from both are beautiful.
The main building is a beautiful testament to traditional architecture with high ceilings and stone arches; it has a tremendous amount of character. The roof needs repair, but the walls are solid, and a lovely traditional stone arch offers structural support. The main building was used as a living area and for sleeping as well, as there are two mezzanine bedrooms. There is also a kitchen with a fireplace.
Next to the main building, there is another, more modern, self-contained unit. It’s still stone-built but was renovated around 15-20 years ago. An external staircase leads to the first floor, where there is an independent kitchen. Opposite, there is a bright living room with a balcony that overlooks the outer courtyard, and a bedroom. With the construction of a bathroom, this unit is ready to live in while renovating the primary building.
Gonia has its own amenities, i.e. a mini market, petrol station and tavernas within walking distance of the house, while Atsipopoulo (a 10-minute drive) offers a wide variety of supermarkets, tavernas, bakeries etc. Rethymno is less than 20 minutes away.
