This beautiful stone-built house sits on the edge of the village. A narrow street leads to the outer courtyard, where one can see the two massive trees (oak & walnut) that offer shade and protection.
A covered gate leads us to the inner courtyard, where there is an external bathroom, a small guest room and a small garden. Both the inner and outer courtyards offer privacy, and the mountain and valley views from both are beautiful.
The main building requires full renovation but has massive potential. It is a testament to traditional architecture with high ceilings and stone arches, and it has a tremendous amount of character. The roof needs repair, but the walls are solid, and a lovely traditional stone arch offers structural support. The main building was used as a living area and for sleeping as well, as there are two mezzanine bedrooms. There is also a kitchen with a fireplace.
Next to the main building, there is another, more modern, self-contained unit. It’s still stone-built but was renovated around 15-20 years ago. An external staircase leads to the first floor, where there is an independent kitchen. Opposite, there is a bright living room with a balcony that overlooks the outer courtyard, and a bedroom. With the construction of a bathroom and some lighter renovation, this unit could be lived in while undertaking the bigger project of the main house.
Gonia has its own amenities, i.e. a mini market, petrol station and tavernas within walking distance of the house, while Atsipopoulo (a 10-minute drive) offers a wide variety of supermarkets, tavernas, bakeries etc. Rethymno is less than 20 minutes away.
